Maker Lab

Focused. Specialised. Real-World STEM.

Maker Lab is GreenSTEM Education’s advanced STEM program, designed for students ready to take the next step beyond STEM Unlimited and typical school-based opportunities.

📍 The Makers – UTAS Cradle Coast, Burnie
🕓 Thursdays | 4:00–6:00 PM
🎯 Grades 7–12

💡 What is Maker Lab?

Maker Lab builds on the curiosity and exploration developed through STEM Unlimited, providing a more focused and specialised learning experience.

While STEM Unlimited is open, flexible, and designed for engagement at all levels, Maker Lab is structured around small groups, clear pathways, and deeper skill development in specific areas of interest.

Students move from exploring STEM to developing real capability.

⚙️ How Maker Lab Works

Students work in small, mentor-led groups, allowing for personalised support, deeper learning, and meaningful progress.

Each group focuses on a specialised area, supported by educators and industry professionals. This creates an environment where students can:

  • Build advanced skills
  • Work collaboratively in teams
  • Engage in sustained, project-based learning
  • Develop confidence through real achievement

🚀 Specialised Learning Opportunities

Maker Lab offers a growing range of specialised STEM programs, including:

  • FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics
Launching Northern Tasmania’s first FTC team, providing the next step in robotics beyond FIRST LEGO League.
  • Greenpower F24 & F24+
Designing, building, and racing single seater electric vehicles as part of a global real-world motorsport engineering program.
  • Game Development (Unity)
Working with a local game designer/developer to create games using Unity—an industry-standard platform used by professionals worldwide.

These are just some of the opportunities available, with programs continuing to expand based on student interest and industry connections.

🌏 Real-World Learning & Pathways

Maker Lab is designed to reflect real-world STEM environments.

Students:

  • Work with mentors and industry professionals
  • Collaborate in teams with peers
  • Use professional tools, platforms, and processes
  • Develop skills aligned with future study and careers
  • Access pathways into national and international programs

This is where STEM learning becomes purposeful, applied, and future-focused.

🎯 Who It’s For

Maker Lab is ideal for students who:

  • Have engaged with STEM Unlimited or similar programs
  • Want to go further with their STEM learning
  • Are interested in engineering, robotics, game development, or design
  • Are ready for a more focused and structured program

No prior experience in specific areas is required—just motivation and a willingness to learn.

💻 Devices & Participation

To get the most out of Maker Lab, it is highly recommended that students bring their own device (laptop).

A limited number of devices are available for use, but having a personal device allows for:

  • Greater flexibility
  • Continued learning at home
  • Access to specialised software and projects

🤝 Supported by the Tasmanian Community Fund

Maker Lab is proudly supported by the Tasmanian Community Fund, helping to expand access to high-quality STEM opportunities for young people across North West Tasmania.
